Energy Efficiency
Description
This carbon project, initiated by WILL Solutions Inc., focuses on promoting energy efficiency and solid waste diversion activities across various client facilities in Quebec, Canada. The project aims to group small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and institutions into a Sustainable Community or cluster, fostering shared commitments to reducing GHG emissions. By leveraging an Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-enabled monitoring system, the project ensures efficient tracking and accurate reporting of emissions reductions. This initiative provides SMEs with access to carbon credit markets as a reward for their sustainability efforts, reducing GHG emissions through improved energy consumption and waste management practices. Key Highlights: 1. Emission Reductions: - Reduction activities include biomass energy projects, methane avoidance, energy conservation, and recycling initiatives. - Monitoring systems were accurately implemented, ensuring no double-counting of reductions. 2. Methodology and Scope: - The project follows the VM0018 methodology for energy efficiency and waste diversion. - Activities span Scope 3 (energy efficiency) and Scope 13 (waste diversion) across 84 facilities and 735 project activity instances (PAIs). 3. Projected Outcomes: - A verified reduction of 22,852,000 tCO2e between 2010 and 2020. - Future expansion to include up to 20,000 facilities by integrating technologies like IoT and blockchain for enhanced monitoring and scalability. 4. Safeguards: - Full compliance with environmental regulations. - Measures to prevent double counting, including the exclusion of facilities participating in Quebec’s Cap-and-Trade System (SPEDE) or other GHG programs. Implementation and Monitoring The project ensures robust data collection and verification through a consolidated monitoring plan, which includes: - Reliable Data Sources: Fuel and energy usage, waste diversion volumes, and emissions factors. - QA/QC Procedures: Regular audits, sampling, and data cross-checking. - Baseline Emissions: Calculated at 796,229 tCO2e, using conservative assumptions and historical data. The monitoring system supports third-party verification, ensuring transparent and credible reporting of emissions reductions. Why This Project Matters This project plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable practices across businesses in Quebec. By grouping client facilities into a collaborative network, it encourages shared responsibility for environmental stewardship while unlocking economic benefits through carbon credits. Its scalable approach and integration of advanced technologies highlight its potential to drive systemic change in GHG emissions management. Through efficient data tracking, rigorous compliance with international standards, and meaningful contributions to global sustainability goals, this initiative serves as a blueprint for collective climate action and the creation of thriving, sustainable communities. Carbon Credits The carbon credits for this project are issued by Verra under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, one of the world’s most widely used GHG crediting programs. Verra’s programs offer comprehensive methodologies and frameworks that support the design and implementation of carbon reduction, sustainable development, and plastic waste reduction projects globally.
