The Natural Palm Oil (Chumporn) Co., Ltd. (NPO) has implemented a project to reduce methane emissions from their palm oil factory, which has been operating since 2002. The factory has a capacity of 45-60 tons of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) per hour or 200 tons of palm oil per day, and has processed an average of 43,875 tons of palm oil per year over the past 3 years (2005-2007). Prior to the project, the wastewater from the plant was treated through a system of 8 cascading lagoons, resulting in an anaerobic environment within the ponds and methane generation from the organic content. Key Highlights: - The project reduces methane emissions from the palm oil factory by capturing and utilizing the methane generated from the wastewater treatment process. - The captured methane is used to generate electricity for the factory, replacing fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. - The project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 7,000 tons per year, and will generate about 7,500 MWh of electricity annually. The NPO's project is important as it demonstrates a sustainable approach to managing wastewater in the palm oil industry. By capturing and utilizing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, the project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also provides a renewable energy source for the factory.
