Salento Post-Xylella Reforestation Project

, is regenerating the olive-growing landscape of Puglia following the devastating 

 epidemic.

To date, the initiative has involved 

317 hectares of degraded agricultural land

. These new groves restore the region’s lost carbon-sequestering biomass while supporting local farmers, reviving Salento’s olive-growing heritage and creating lasting environmental and socioeconomic value.

The project removes atmospheric CO₂ through carbon sequestration in the above-ground and below-ground biomass of the newly planted olive trees, with additional expected gains in soil organic carbon (SOC) through sustainable soil management. Because the pre-project land held only dead, removed trees and no active carbon sink, the baseline is conservatively set at zero, ensuring that every credited tonne represents a genuine, additional removal.

Replanting olive groves after the Xylella disaster carries significant financial risk, and no legal obligation requires reforestation of the area. Carbon credit revenues provide the essential financial incentive that makes restoration of this land economically viable — going well beyond the business-as-usual scenario of abandonment.

10% buffer reserve: A precautionary buffer of at least 10% of generated carbon removal units is withheld to cover unforeseen losses from natural disasters, fire, or disease.

Proactive safeguards: An additional 10% of trees are planted (or 10% allocated without tokenization) to protect the integrity of the offsetting activities.

Rigorous risk assessment: A non-permanence risk assessment conducted with Verra's AFOLU Non-Permanence Risk Tool v4.2 returned an overall score of 39.5 — comfortably within acceptable thresholds across internal, external, and natural risk categories.

The project operates a continuous MRV system combining satellite remote sensing (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Landsat 8/9) with field measurements of tree diameter and height, and periodic soil carbon sampling analyzed by accredited laboratories using the Walkley & Black method. Annual monitoring reports are published in a public carbon farming registry, and blockchain technology notarizes each credit, with smart contracts automating issuance and retirement for full transparency and traceability.

The project is developed in conformity with ISO 14064-2:2019, the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Verra VM0042 v2.0, the Verra AFOLU Non-Permanence Risk Tool v4.2, CDM AR-AMS0007 v3.1, and the principles of the LIFE C-Farms European framework.

By restoring productive olive groves on land scarred by ecological disaster, the project supports local farmers through dedicated training in sustainable land management, preserves Salento's olive-growing heritage, and contributes to the economic revival of rural communities in one of the regions hardest hit by the Xylella epidemic.

Developed by OLIVAMI ETS, this high-impact agroforestry project transforms land devastated by Xylella fastidiosa into thriving, climate-resilient olive groves. By purchasing these credits, companies support verified carbon removals while helping regenerate Southern Italy’s landscape, revive its olive-growing heritage and create long-term value for local farmers. Following the successful restoration of 317 hectares, the project is ready to scale through a pipeline of 8,000–10,000 hectares. Carbon removals are quantified in accordance with ISO 14064-2 and IPCC methodologies, with a 20-year permanence commitment and a 10% buffer reserve.
