Description

The FORTALEZA ITUXI REDD PROJECT is a forest conservation initiative aimed at protecting the forests in Lábrea, one of the regions with the highest deforestation rate in the Amazon Biome. Lábrea, located in the southernmost part of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, is situated near the "Arc of Deforestation" and is surrounded by other highly deforested municipalities. The project is expected to bring the following benefits: Key Highlights: - Net GHG emission reductions of 720,470 tCO2e, which corresponds to the avoidance of deforestation of 1,836.5 hectares over 30 years. - Technical training on sustainable cattle raising and forest management, fire brigades, and studies for a small non-wood product processing plant. The project has also set up a Brazil-nut production facility. - Seedling Production Nursery with a capacity of producing 50,000 native-species seedlings per year. The seedlings are donated to neighbors who wish to plant them. - Implementation of technical education frameworks to equip locals with skills for sustainable resource management. - Complementary monitoring of labor conditions in Project Area and implementation of a health insurance plan for workers. The project also monitors the attendance of young children in schools. - The project has generated employment opportunities beyond timber management through commercial activity in the "Castanhal Fortaleza" company. The FORTALEZA ITUXI REDD PROJECT is significant because it helps to improve the livelihoods of the local communities while conserving the forest. The project's technical training and seedling production initiatives equip locals with skills to manage their resources sustainably. In addition, the project's health insurance plan and monitoring of labor conditions improve the welfare of workers in the region. Furthermore, the project helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the Amazon Biome, which is crucial for global climate change mitigation efforts.
