Description

The Inner Mongolia Keyihe IFM (Improved Forest Management) Project is a large-scale conservation initiative dedicated to protecting the forests of Oroqen Autonomous Banner, Hulun Buir City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. The project focuses on the conversion of previously logged forests into protected forests, ensuring long-term sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. Spanning 20,526 hectares, this initiative safeguards forests primarily composed of Birch (Betula platyphylla) and Larch (Larix gmelinii), key species vital for maintaining ecological balance. Key Highlights Significant Carbon Sequestration - The project has removed 492,793 tCO₂e of net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the 2017-2020 monitoring period. - It achieves an annual GHG emission reduction of 164,264 tCO₂e, contributing to climate change mitigation through enhanced carbon storage. Forest Conservation & Ecosystem Protection - Commercial logging has been completely eliminated since January 1, 2013, allowing the forests to regenerate and thrive. - The project safeguards critical forest ecosystems, preventing biodiversity loss and protecting wildlife habitats. - It also plays a crucial role in reducing soil erosion, enhancing water retention, and improving overall watershed health. - Community Engagement & Sustainable Development - While restricting logging, the project has introduced alternative livelihoods, such as mushroom and fungus harvesting, benefiting local communities. - Active engagement with local stakeholders ensures no negative socio-economic impacts, fostering community support for sustainable forest management. Verification & Compliance The Inner Mongolia Keyihe IFM Project is validated and verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Version 4.0, ensuring transparency and accountability. It complies with China’s National Forestry Law and follows international best practices for sustainable forest management. The project undergoes regular site inspections and continuous monitoring to maintain effectiveness, ensuring it meets its conservation and carbon sequestration goals. A Scalable Model for Global Sustainability This undertaking demonstrates a replicable, nature-based solution to combat deforestation, enhance biodiversity, and promote ecological resilience. By protecting and managing the forests of Oroqen Autonomous Banner, it plays a vital role in global climate mitigation efforts, setting a benchmark for responsible forestry and carbon sequestration. Carbon Credits The carbon credits for this project are issued by Verra under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, one of the world’s most widely used GHG crediting programs. Verra provides robust methodologies and frameworks that support carbon reduction, sustainable development, and plastic waste reduction projects worldwide.
